Q: How does ROOTS Eco Tonic work?
A: ROOTS Eco Tonic Tar & Resin Remover is made from solvents derived from natural, renewable resources – plants! It works by bonding with molecules that make up the tar build-up on non-porous surfaces like glass, ceramic, polished stone or metal and break their bond to the surface of the affected piece. Just a short soak and mild agitation to repeatedly re-coat the deposits is all ROOTS needs to work. Check out our videos to get some ideas as to what will work for your piece.
Q: How long does it take to clean with ROOTS Eco Tonic?
A: Depending on deposit thickness and age of the tar, cleaning time can be anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes. It really depends on how badly the piece is neglected.
Q: How much ROOTS Eco Tonic should I use per cleaning?
A: Use 1 to 2 ounces of ROOTS Eco Tonic or enough to coat your piece. Submerging is not necessary.
Q: Is there anything I can do to make ROOTS work even better?
A: It has been our experience and the experience of some of our customers that heating the deposits up allows for ROOTS to get to the actual surface of the affected piece more quickly and thus pop it off faster than if it has to go layer-by-layer by itself. We’re told that dry hitting the piece just to warm it does wonders & cuts cleaning time down significantly. You will find your own best way to use ROOTS as pieces are like people, they’re all different!
Q: What items can I clean with ROOTS Eco Tonic?
A: ROOTS Eco Tonic can clean tar & resin off a wide variety of items. Most common pieces are harvesting and processing equipment to smoking pieces. This includes, but is not limited to, shears, scissors, clippers, trays, hanging/drying rods and pruning blades used in harvesting and processing. Any glass, ceramic, metal or any non-porous surface coated with tar & resin can be cleaned with ROOTS Eco Tonic.
Warning: If there is paint or enamel on these pieces, ROOTS Eco Tonic could soften, damage or remove it in the cleaning process.
Q: What factors determine how long it will take to clean my piece?
A: We have found that the thickness of the tar buildup and how long it has been on the affected surface are the factors that impact the length of time it takes to clean with ROOTS Eco Tonic. For severely neglected pieces or the ones that have been put in a drawer and forgotten, it tends to take a couple applications of ROOTS Eco Tonic to remove what we refer to as “petrified” build-up completely. Adding a tablespoon of salt has also been found to give a mechanical edge to the cleaning process.
Q: What items may help when cleaning with ROOTS Eco Tonic?
A: For small pieces, it’s easiest to use a plastic bag to saturate the piece during the cleaning process. It also helps to have salt, a pipe cleaner, cotton swabs, a paper towel, toothpick or a utensil to nudge really stubborn patches which commonly occur where the most heat is concentrated. These are optional choices to speed the cleaning process.
Q: What about extra-stubborn deposits that I can't reach?
A: We have found that some pieces that have extra-thick deposits or have been sitting for a long time – sometimes years! – that the deposit becomes petrified and extremely hard to remove without being nudged by mechanical means, usually a toothpick or pipe cleaner. When this is not possible or not available, we have found that adding 1-2 tablespoons regular table salt in with ROOTS will almost always work to remove these deposits. Salt will not dissolve in our product so it provides a mechanical action for those hard-to-reach areas and is enough to get even the most stubborn patches off usually with soaking time added.
Q: What makes ROOTS Eco Tonic better than other products on the market?
A: Unlike any other product available, ROOTS Eco Tonic is totally free of any hydrocarbon products. Hydrocarbons are derived from the refining of crude oil. This includes, but not limited to isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol), acetone, ethyl acetate and methanol. ROOTS Eco Tonic has an extremely low VOC content (volatile organic compounds) of less than 1%. Other products on the market are as high as 100% VOC. These products contain known carcinogens (cancer causers) and are extremely bad for the environment, as well as personal health, if any residue is left on your piece when next used. In addition, where many competitive products include salt (that sometimes comprises half the bottle) to aid in cleaning. ROOTS Eco Tonic does not waste space with undissolved salt that may aide in the cleaning process allow for far more uses per bottle with ROOTS Eco Tonic than any other product available on the market.
Q: What do you mean when you call ROOTS Eco Tonic eco-friendly?
A: Every ingredient in ROOTS Eco Tonic comes from plants with roots. There are no harsh, dangerous or toxic chemicals like rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) that come from the distillation and refining of crude oil. Rubbing Alcohol, also known as Isopropyl Alcohol or IPA, is a product that is made by reacting good, clean water with propylene oxide, a carbon-based product derived from oil. It’s also made by reacting water with acetone, which is a by-product in the refining process of oil into gasoline. Acetone is 100% VOC. Rubbing Alcohol is 100% VOC. These are the products our ‘competitors’ use. We use products that are plant-based, renewable in nature, inherently biodegradable and very low VOC content. ROOTS Eco Tonic works better than petrochemical options at a lower per-use cost to the customer. We use a recycled paper for packing material instead of styrofoam peanuts. We have thought long and hard about being as environmentally conscious as possible throughout the process of producing and delivering our product to our customers.
Q: Can ROOTS Eco Tonic be re-used over and over again?
A: We do not advise it and here’s why: as you clean with Roots, the molecules or our products are bonding with those of the tar & resin in order to lift them from the surface and allow the warm water rinse to wash both the tar & resin and our product away. Those bonded molecules no longer work…and while you may be able to filter it and try to use it again, it will lose a great deal of efficacy. So while it likely can be done, we do not recommend it And we strongly recommend you do not mix used with unused product.
Q: Are there any materials I should not clean with ROOTS Eco Tonic?
A: ROOTS Eco Tonic should not be used on plastics, acrylics or anything that has rubber gaskets or fittings. While our product will not immediately degrade these materials, over time it may damage them and we’d hate to be responsible for hurting your favorite piece.
Q: Can I use my ROOTS Eco Tonic to clean other surfaces?
A: Always use extreme caution when using ROOTS Eco Tonic, as it is a strong solvent. That being said, it has numerous other very effective uses such as removing adhesive residue off of non-porous surfaces like glass, metal or ceramic. It is has success removing permanent marker off of these surfaces as well. Lastly, it is an amazing stainless steel cleaner, rust remover and rust inhibitor. Avoid any enamel writings on stainless cleaner appliances and avoid rubber or plastic parts. Enjoy!
